About the Story

Ellie is exploring Victoria’s historic Chinatown when a mysterious red door catches her eye. Stepping through, she discovers the spirits of Tam Kung Temple, where stories of sailors, gold seekers, railroad workers, merchants, and families unfold around her.

Through Ellie’s eyes, readers:

  • Feel the sights and emotions of early Chinese immigrants

  • Learn how the temple was a space for solace, reflection, and community

  • Understand how traditions and spirituality helped people endure  discrimination and separation

Each page presents English at the top and French at the bottom, allowing the story to be read in either language or both.
